Study finds salaries in Budapest up to thirteen times higher than in Borsod region

A GKI Gazdaságkutató Zrt. analysis shows net monthly wages in Budapest far exceed those in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, with differences approaching thirteenfold.

GKI Gazdaságkutató Zrt. mapped projected 2025 net earnings by settlement, highlighting stark regional wage gaps. Using data from the Központi Statisztikai Hivatal and the Nemzeti Adó- és Vámhivatal, the study found a national average net monthly salary of 487 000 forints (KSH) and 521 000 forints (NAV). Budapest’s average net monthly wage was about 550 000 forints, whereas villages and small towns averaged roughly 502 000 forints.

The ten highest-earning places include Budapest districts II and XII and several affluent Pest-county villages such as Telki, Nagykovácsi, Budajenő, Üröm and Herceghalom, with top figures ranging from 810 000 to 981 000 forints. Conversely, eight of the ten lowest-earning settlements are in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, with the poorest locality, Csenyét, reporting an average of 158 000 forints. The report notes that wage growth was proportionally stronger in lagging regions, but the overall disparity remains large.

Why it matters
