Study links new animal spillover to Congo-Uganda Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak
Genetic testing shows the current Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda stems from a fresh animal-to-human spillover rather than a resurgence of earlier strains.
A multinational team analyzed the genetic makeup of Ebola virus samples taken from 22 infected individuals in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. Their findings, released in Nature Medicine, reveal that the current Bundibugyo strain differs from those responsible for outbreaks in 2007 and 2012, pointing to a recent animal-to-human transmission as the origin. The study did not pinpoint the specific animal reservoir, but it underscores that such spillovers occur periodically.
Genetic evidence also ties the Ugandan cases directly to the Congolese outbreak, confirming cross-border spread. Authors stress that expanding diagnostic testing and virus sequencing could enable earlier detection of future Ebola events. No approved vaccine or treatment exists for this Bundibugyo variant, though candidates are under development, and the outbreak, declared on May 15, has exceeded 2,000 deaths with 4,381 confirmed cases.
