Supporters of Călin Georgescu Hold Twelfth Day of Protests Outside Central Prison
Around 50 demonstrators gathered outside Bucharest's Central Prison on Saturday, marking the twelfth consecutive day of protests demanding the release of former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu.
On Saturday, roughly fifty supporters of Călin Georgescu assembled in front of Bucharest's Central Prison, continuing a series of demonstrations that have lasted twelve days since his detention. Demonstrators erected tents, waved flags and held signs calling for his release and alleging that the case against him is manufactured. The Capital Gendarmerie said it imposed 124 contraventional sanctions for breaches of the law governing public gatherings, citing both the public assembly statute and regulations on public order.
Authorities also deployed dialogue units to engage with the crowd and ensure the safety of nearby residents. In addition, the gendarmerie logged a number of emergency calls related to the protests and forwarded several reports to the criminal investigation authorities.
Why it matters
The protests highlight public dissent over the high-profile arrest of a former presidential contender and raise questions about the handling of political cases.
