Swedish Green Party pushes motion to permanently halt teen deportations

During the opening of a new filing period, Miljöpartiet introduced a motion demanding that the Swedish Parliament quickly develop a permanent prohibition on the deportation of teenagers and young adults and present it to the government. The proposal calls for the revival of the previously abolished clause granting special consideration to adults with strong Swedish connections, and for amendments to the alien law allowing expelled youths to re-enter Sweden.

Annika Hirvonen, the party’s migration policy spokesperson, noted that the Centre and Liberal parties have already expressed support, while discussions with the Social Democrats are pending. The motion also urges equal access to free higher education for youths raised in Sweden, comparable to Swedish citizens and EU nationals. The Social Insurance Committee, which will convene next week, will determine the timing of any vote, and the party is pressing for an expedited decision.
