Swedish school election shows leftward shift and continued dominance of Moderates

The risk-day school election of 2026, overseen by the Myndigheten för ungdoms- och civilsamhällesfrågor since 2002, attracted participation from schools in the majority of Swedish municipalities. Voter turnout reached a historic high, providing a detailed snapshot of youth political attitudes. Results indicate a pronounced shift to the left, as the Social Democrats, Vänsterpartiet and Miljöpartiet each improved their percentages, while the Moderates expanded their lead to 32.7 percent, up from 27.1 percent in 2022.

The Liberals and Christian Democrats fell below the electoral threshold, and the Sweden Democrats experienced the steepest decline, losing seven percentage points. Support for "other parties" rose, driven mainly by Örebropartiet and Alternativ för Sverige. Although the school vote does not affect national elections, officials stress its importance for democratic engagement among young people.
