Swedish Speaker Sets Tuesday Meeting to Decide on Prime Minister Vote Timing

Magdalena Andersson has asked for more time to report to Speaker Andreas Norlén, who will meet her on Tuesday to decide whether a confidence vote can be scheduled.

It has been a month since Sweden's election and attempts to form a government are still deadlocked. Magdalena Andersson asked Speaker Andreas Norlén for additional time to present her final report, a request that was approved. The two are scheduled to meet on Tuesday at 11 a.m., after which the Speaker will decide whether to close the process or grant further extensions if talks persist.

Norlén has warned that a confidence vote will be required regardless of the outcome, aiming to increase pressure on the parties. The stalemate mainly involves the Left Party and Centre Party, with no clear breakthrough in sight. Procedurally, a vote could theoretically occur on Thursday, but the necessary parliamentary session has not been called. Andersson expressed doubt about winning such a vote at this stage.

Why it matters

The decision will determine when Sweden may hold a confidence vote that could break one outlet government formation deadlock.
