Taiwan's President Calls for Honest WWII Narrative as He Boosts Defense and Diplomacy
President William Lai urged respect for World War II history while supporting US-China dialogue, noting Taiwan’s higher defence spending and a Coast Guard goodwill visit to Palau.
President William Lai, delivering Taiwan’s National Day speech, welcomed efforts by the United States and China to manage competition through dialogue, but warned that any such talks must acknowledge the true history of World War II and respect Taiwan’s sovereignty. He said Taiwan has responded to sustained Chinese “gray zone” tactics by raising defence spending and integrating civilian capabilities into its security strategy, stressing that this is not provocation but a prerequisite for dignified dialogue.
Lai cited his May visit to Eswatini, the June trip of Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim to Palau, and her recent speech in Italy as examples of expanding diplomacy. He also announced that two Coast Guard Administration patrol vessels, Chiayi and Penghu, had arrived in Palau’s Malakal Harbor on a “friendship fleet” mission to deepen ties. Emphasizing the slogan “Taiwan Can Help,” Lai asserted the island’s willingness to share expertise in health, agriculture, technology and other sectors with international partners.
