Tamil Nadu Chief Minister commemorates one year since Karur rally stampede

Marking the one-year milestone of the Karur tragedy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay posted a solemn message on X, recalling the September 27, 2025 stampede that claimed 41 lives during his own political rally. He described the loss as a wound that does not heal and extended solidarity to the bereaved families. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has put a hold on the Madras High Court’s decision that struck down the state’s scheme to provide government jobs to the victims’ kin.

The apex court questioned why the state should be barred from offering such employment as part of relief, especially when many deceased were sole breadwinners. The High Court had previously ruled the appointments unconstitutional under Articles 14 and 16, but allowed a temporary continuation pending the challenge. Legal teams for the government and the victims presented arguments before the bench.
