Tamil Nadu expands free bus travel for women, issuing zero-fare tickets statewide
On Gandhi Jayanti, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay inaugurated the broadened Vetri Payanam program, handing out free-fare tickets at Koyambedu Bus Terminus. The initiative now includes express, deluxe, suburban and hill-area buses operated by the seven State Transport Corporations, adding 12,695 buses and 1,68,500 trips daily. It seeks to eliminate transport costs as a barrier for women, students, workers and transgender persons. Deployment in Madurantakam and Dharapuram is on hold due to the election code.
The Tamil Nadu government unveiled an enlarged version of its Vetri Payanam initiative on Gandhi Jayanti, with Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay distributing zero-fare tickets to female passengers at Koyambedu Bus Terminus. Previously limited to city and short-distance buses, the program now covers express, limited-stop, deluxe, suburban ordinary and Ghat services run by the seven State Transport Corporations, totaling 12,695 buses and 1,68,500 daily trips.
Officials estimate that about 84.32 lakh women will benefit each day, gaining free access to education, employment, healthcare and other essential travel. Transport Minister A Vijay Tamilan Parthiban described the move as a social revolution promoting equality and economic empowerment. The rollout is delayed in Madurantakam (Chengalpattu district) and Dharapuram (Tiruppur district) until the ongoing by-elections conclude. Senior officials, including Chief Secretary M Sai Kumar and Transport Secretary L Nirmalraj, attended the launch.
