Tate Taylor clinches triple gold as U.S. sets new U20 medal record in Eugene

At the World U20 Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, 18-year-old Tate Taylor secured three gold medals by winning the 100 m, the 200 m and anchoring the men’s 4×100 m relay, which posted a world U20 record of 38.16 seconds. His relay teammates were Blake Hamilton, Dillon Mitchell and Kyler Brown. Taylor’s victories marked the first time a U.S. male athlete swept both individual sprint titles at a U20 Worlds.

The United States concluded the competition with a record 24 medals, eclipsing the Soviet Union’s 22-medal tally from 1988, and earned 12 golds, just one short of its 2004 high. The team also swept the men’s and women’s 4×400 m relays, and saw strong performances from Simon Rosselli in discus, Claire Stegall’s near-victory in the women’s 1500 m, and Jaxon Jerabek’s pole-vault bronze. The season will continue with the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest later September.
