Tok Mat says Negeri Sembilan ruler dispute won’t hinder BN’s Melaka election push

Former Negeri Sembilan chief minister Tok Mat warned that BN’s success in Melaka depends on turning strategy into voter turnout, despite the ongoing state ruler crisis.

At a ceremony in Melaka, former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Mohamad, known as Tok Mat, told reporters that Barisan Nasional’s chances hinge on converting its paper-based strategy into real voter turnout. He warned that without mobilising supporters, any plan is ineffective. His comments arrive as Negeri Sembilan endures a succession dispute that began in April, when four self-styled undangs claimed to have removed Yang Dipertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.

The same group later announced Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar as the new ruler at a hotel in Melaka. In June, state chief minister Ismail Lasim backed a council statement supporting the removal, prompting Tuanku Muhriz to revoke the council’s appointments under constitutional authority. Tok Mat stressed that translating party policies into on-the-ground action is essential for the upcoming Melaka polls.

Why it matters

The ruling party’s ability to mobilise voters could shape election outcomes amid a high-profile royal succession dispute.
