Top seed Alexander Zverev survives five-set scare to beat Lorenzo Sonego

In a dramatic opening-round clash at Arthur Ashe Stadium, top-seed Alexander Zverev overcame a two-set deficit to beat Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 3-6, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4. The contest stretched 4 hours and 52 minutes, concluding in the early hours of Wednesday. Sonego held a match point in the fourth set but could not finish it, allowing Zverev to force a fifth set with a decisive ace.

Zverev then broke early in the final set and sealed the win on double match point. The victory improved his head-to-head record against Sonego to 7-0 and kept the perfect 11-0 record for men’s top seeds in five-set matches since the Open Era began. Zverev said the win was a needed confidence boost after recent struggles.
