She missed an extra-class session, leading peers to assume she was ill, but she never returned home. At about 5.30 pm, her grandmother and a friend entered the school and found her dead in the hall, with visible blood stains, bruises and a broken flower pot nearby, suggesting a violent incident.
Classmates described her as diligent and involved in extracurricular activities, expressing disbelief at the tragedy. A teacher later informed students that something "bad" had occurred, prompting the investigation. Irene had been living with her grandmother after her mother died of cancer, while her father works in Kuala Lumpur.
