Tottenham manager De Zerbi omits Richarlison from Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool

Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi announced that Richarlison will not play in the Carabao Cup match against Liverpool, even though the striker remains eligible for cup competitions.

Roberto De Zerbi confirmed that Richarlison will be left out of Tottenham's Carabao Cup quarter-final against Liverpool, despite the Brazilian remaining eligible for cup matches after being omitted from the 25-man Premier League list. The striker had earlier been told he was not part of the club's future and turned down a transfer to Vasco da Gama, as well as a failed move to Everton. De Zerbi explained that he had attempted to secure a new contract for Richarlison at the start of the season, but the player declined, leaving the relationship between player and club unresolved.

In addition to Richarlison, Tottenham will miss Pedro Porro and Sandro Tonali at Anfield, prompting the manager to consider options such as Lucas Bergvall, Mathys Tel, JP van Hecke, Micky van de Ven and other defenders. De Zerbi stressed his focus on the result and the team's offensive and defensive phases, while hoping to progress deep into both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.

Why it matters

The decision highlights a lingering contract dispute that could weaken Tottenham's chances in the Carabao Cup.
