Train strike enters talks as unions and employers seek resolution

The leader of the Norwegian Train Drivers Union confirmed that negotiations have begun with the employers' association to end a three-week rail strike.

After more than three weeks of rail disruption, the Norwegian Train Drivers Union announced that negotiations with the employers' group have started. Rolf Ringdal confirmed via a text message that both parties are discussing a solution, following a period in which 72 locomotive engineers were on strike. Vy reported that over 370 train departures were cancelled on Saturday and Sunday.

Earlier, Ringdal said the union had prepared a proposal to present to the employer. Spekter’s communications director Tonje Sagstuen responded that the strike has severely impacted passengers and that dialogue is natural, though she offered no specifics about the negotiations. Ringdal expressed confidence that an agreement could be reached by the end of the weekend, possibly even earlier.

Why it matters

The rail strike affects thousands of commuters and the talks could restore essential transport services.
