Trans athlete calls for data-driven debate as WNBA controversy escalates

Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever sparked a national controversy with remarks about protecting young girls from competing against biological men, leading to a wave of political posturing and protests. Former NBA figures Royce White and Enes Kanter Freedom later claimed they would enter the 2027 WNBA draft identifying as women, a move the league’s task-force denounced as a misuse of the issue. Transgender athlete-researcher Kirsti Miller pointed out that fewer than ten trans athletes compete among over half a million NCAA participants, and no openly trans woman has played in the WNBA’s three-decade history.

She cited Australian policies requiring hormone therapy and recent scientific findings that hormone treatment reduces muscle mass and performance in trans women. Miller warned that blanket bans lack scientific support and that the current hormone-based regulations already level the playing field.
