Tugendhat to Take Over Shadow Foreign Secretary Role from Patel

Tom Tugendhat, who previously ran for the Conservative leadership, is slated to replace Dame Priti Patel as the party’s shadow foreign secretary when Kemi Badenoch conducts a front-bench reshuffle next month. Patel said she will shift to a role focused on strengthening connections with sister parties and centre-right movements abroad. The move follows the resignation of shadow housing secretary James Cleverly, who is leaving to pursue the London mayoralty.

A reshuffle was already expected due to Claire Coutinho’s upcoming maternity leave from the shadow energy post. While some party insiders have downplayed rumors about shadow chancellor Mel Stride’s future, others still think Badenoch could consider a change. Many within the Conservatives view Coutinho as a potential future shadow chancellor, though her current leave makes that unlikely for now.
