Turkey to unveil $100 billion National Energy 2040 plan for power grid overhaul
Turkey’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced that the country will present its National Energy 2040 strategy, targeting roughly $100 billion for transmission and distribution upgrades.
Turkey is set to launch its National Energy 2040 roadmap next Thursday, with Minister Alparslan Bayraktar outlining a projected $100 billion spend on transmission and distribution infrastructure. He highlighted the need for stronger, smarter grids capable of real-time monitoring, demand forecasting and rapid fault response, as electricity use expands across industry, transport, buildings and agriculture. The strategy calls for domestic software development, protection against cyber threats, and integration of renewable, nuclear and efficient energy sources.
Bayraktar noted that achieving true energy independence requires not just resource ownership but optimal timing and location of energy use. The plan will be promoted at the upcoming COP31 summit, where Turkey intends to lead the Global Electrification Pledge to increase electricity’s share of global final energy consumption to 35% by 2035. He also mentioned that Turkish distribution firms are expanding abroad, aiming to showcase their technology internationally.
Why it matters
The plan could reshape Turkey’s power sector, attract massive investment and influence global electricity trends.
