Two separate mass shootings in South Africa kill at least 27 people

Overnight, South Africa experienced two deadly mass shootings in different provinces. In Wedela township, west of Johannesburg, gunmen equipped with AK-47s and pistols entered a bar around 9:30 p.m., killing 17 people—13 men and four women—and wounding 15 others before fleeing in two unknown vehicles. Authorities have initiated a manhunt for eight unidentified suspects.
In the Western Cape, at an entertainment venue in Lwandle township, gunmen opened fire at 1:46 a.m., killing 10 victims, five on the scene and five later in hospital, while 11 more were injured. A specialised team of serious and violent crime detectives has been deployed to locate the attackers, but no arrests have been reported. These attacks follow a recent shooting in KwaMakhutha, KwaZulu-Natal, where 11 people were killed. South Africa continues to struggle with high levels of violent crime, averaging around 60 daily homicide victims.
