Two threads break on Bayeux Tapestry but overall condition remains unchanged after UK loan
France’s culture minister said that only two threads are broken on the 11th-century Bayeux Tapestry after its transport to London, and the artefact is otherwise in the same condition as when it left Bayeux.
In July, the 11th-century Bayeux Tapestry left France for the first time in over 900 years, traveling to London for a display at the British Museum that will run until July 2027. After arrival, culture minister Catherine Pegard reported that a careful inspection revealed two broken threads along the 70-metre length, while the overall state of the embroidery matches its condition before departure. The tapestry, which illustrates the Battle of Hastings, was transported in a specially designed double case that maintained constant temperature and humidity and minimized vibrations.
A French ministry official had earlier noted no visible alteration during transit, and La Croix confirmed only slight tears in the linen backing. The loan has been highlighted by King Charles III and President Emmanuel Macron as a symbol of renewed trust between the two nations.
