U.S. naval blockade halts Iran's crude shipments through Hormuz for first time
A U.S. naval blockade, reinstated in mid-July, has stopped Iranian crude from reaching China via the Strait of Hormuz, creating a seven-week pause in meaningful exports.
The United States re-imposed a naval blockade on Iran on July 14, creating a sustained interruption of crude shipments through the Strait of Hormuz that has lasted about seven weeks. Tracking data from Kpler, Vortexa and TankerTrackers.com show that no Iranian cargoes have reached China, Tehran’s sole major oil buyer, since the blockade’s start. Iranian loading dropped to an estimated 220,000-255,000 barrels per day in August, a sharp decline from roughly 740,000 barrels per day in July and about 2 million barrels per day in March.
Analysts warn that the loss of this foreign-currency source may force the regime to finance spending by printing money, potentially worsening an inflation rate already near 70 percent. Although traders still list September and October cargoes for China, the volumes are lower because floating storage is diminishing and empty tankers cannot return to Iranian ports. A number of Iran-linked tankers remain active outside the blockade zone, but many are stranded offshore awaiting orders.
Why it matters
The blockade cuts off a key source of foreign currency for Iran, heightening economic pressure on the regime.
