UDMR says it will back new Romanian cabinet even without joining it

After meeting with Luca Niculescu, UDMR announced it will support the formation of a new Romanian government despite not taking a ministerial role, while ruling out any alliance with AUR or SOS.

Following talks with Luca Niculescu at the UDMR headquarters, the party signaled its willingness to endorse the upcoming Romanian government even if it does not become part of the coalition. Antal Arpad Andras said the conversation with the designated prime minister was candid and focused on the government's programme and the challenges confronting Romania, such as a faltering economy, job losses, pension indexation and societal imbalances.

UDMR emphasized that its sole red line is any partnership with sovereignist forces, specifically AUR and SOS, and therefore will not vote for a cabinet that includes them. The party also indicated it is waiting for the stances of the two major parties, PSD and PNL, before making a final decision on whether to take part in the government. While open to supporting a cabinet, UDMR does not demand a ministerial post, insisting that the priority is a functional programme for the country.

Why it matters

The stance could determine whether Romania can form a stable governing majority.
