UEFA pushes for Nations League expansion with CONCACAF involvement
UEFA is negotiating with CONCACAF to add non-European teams to the Nations League, potentially for the 2028-29 season.
UEFA has begun discussions with CONCACAF on expanding the Nations League to feature teams from outside Europe, with a possible rollout in the 2028-29 edition. The Asian Football Confederation is reportedly interested in joining at a later stage. UEFA chief Aleksander Čeferin and CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani are understood to prefer that FIFA president Gianni Infantino resign rather than seek re-election amid controversy over his private-investor proposal.
The proposed schedule would use the autumn 2028 windows for the league phase and hold the finals in March and June of the next year. Infantino is expected to attend a youth football event in the Dominican Republic, where he may meet Montagliani, a potential future FIFA candidate. Some Caribbean nations, including St Kitts & Nevis, Grenada and Antigua and Barbuda, have already voiced support for the plan.
Why it matters
The talks could reshape international football competitions and affect FIFA leadership dynamics.
