UK defence secretary urges citizens to stockpile nine essentials for emergencies

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has updated the government’s “Be Ready” advice, urging Britons to keep nine basic items on hand for three days of disruption.

During a speech today, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting warned that Britain could face disruptions like supermarket payment system failures and urged the public to prepare for three days of self-sufficiency. The updated “Be Ready” guidance outlines nine categories of supplies: bottled water, canned or dried food, hygiene items, torches and warm clothing, a battery-powered or wind-up radio with a power bank, cash and copies of identification, a basic first-aid kit with essential medicines, and ready-to-feed baby formula with nappies.

Security Minister Dan Jarvis stressed that individuals who follow the advice will reduce strain on emergency responders, allowing them to focus on the most vulnerable. The campaign aims to improve national resilience to everyday emergencies such as severe weather or infrastructure outages. Officials encourage citizens to store enough provisions for three days per person. The recommendation forms part of a broader effort to promote preparedness across the United Kingdom.
