UK government unveils new heating-cost assistance ahead of October price-cap rise

In response to rising heating costs, the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero detailed a package of support for households facing the October 1 increase in Ofgem's price cap. VAT on electricity remains removed, and a £150 reduction has been taken off energy bills since April, complemented by an expanded Warm Home Discount that will credit eligible electricity accounts automatically. The discount applies to those on qualifying benefits and whose names appear on the bill by 23 August 2026.

The broader £15 billion Warm Homes Plan seeks to upgrade homes, lower energy expenses and lift one million families out of fuel poverty by 2030, with a pilot to let health professionals refer patients needing warmer homes. To improve targeting, the department is collaborating on a National Data Library project to better link public-sector data. The measures aim to ease cost-of-living pressure for vulnerable groups, especially those with medical conditions requiring higher indoor temperatures.
