UK offshore workers to stage multi-day strike over pay cuts and fire-and-rehire threats

Unite and RMT unions will walk out for six days in October and November after Wood Group announced cuts to pay and conditions, including fire-and-rehire notices.

Unite and the RMT have scheduled six days of industrial action for offshore production, instrument and mechanical technicians employed by the Wood Group, beginning with a two-day walkout on Oct 6-7 and followed by additional stoppages on Oct 20-21 and Nov 3-4. The unions are protesting a consultation that would reduce pay and conditions and includes the possibility of fire-and-rehire notices, which they describe as corporate greed.

The RMT has also instructed members to refuse overtime from Oct 8 onward. Union officials warned that the strikes will likely disrupt Harbour Energy’s offshore operations and could affect UK fuel supplies, echoing concerns about a similar strike at Apache. Wood Group acknowledged the planned action, stating that employee safety and operational safety remain paramount despite the dispute.

Why it matters

The strike could interrupt offshore energy production and threaten UK fuel supply stability.
