UK pledges continued support for Ukraine as US-Ukraine ties strain
The United Kingdom said it will keep urging the United States to maintain aid for Ukraine despite recent tensions over sanctions and Starlink restrictions.
Over the past week, Ukraine’s partnership with the United States has deteriorated following Donald Trump’s decision to relax sanctions on Russian diesel and allegations that Elon Musk’s SpaceX imposed a speed limit on Starlink terminals mounted on Ukrainian drones. Zelensky accused the Pentagon and Trump of causing the limitation, which was partially lifted but still hampered Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian attacks.
The Ukrainian leader also announced renewed strikes on Russian oil refineries, criticizing Trump’s overtures to Moscow. In London, skills minister Jacqui Smith told one outlet Radio that Britain will continue to make the case for US support, mirroring Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s careful language about the diesel deal and his hope for reconciliation. At a Downing Street meeting with Zelensky, the UK prime minister pledged that British aid, including accelerated air-defence missile deliveries, will remain unchanged.
Why it matters
UK’s commitment could influence continued Western military aid to Ukraine amid a fragile US-Ukraine relationship.
