Ukraine reports Starlink speeds back above 400 km/h after week of throttling
Ukraine’s defence ministry said the Starlink satellite system and its military‑grade Starshield network are now delivering connectivity at speeds exceeding 400 km/h, after a period when data rates were limited to roughly 161 km/h and drones lost contact at higher velocities. Defence Minister Jevhenyij Hmara confirmed the higher speeds and stressed the link’s importance for frontline communications, logistics and drone operations.
President Donald Trump asserted that full access had been restored following a call with Elon Musk, while Ukrainian officials said the speed caps may still be in effect. In response, EU parliament member Heléne Fritzon launched a petition that gathered more than 60 signatures from fellow legislators, calling on the European Commission and President Ursula von der Leyen to seek an explanation from the United States.
How this was covered
- Left-leaning outlets covered this 12h later
- Coverage peaked at 9 outlets in a single hour
Why it matters
Reliable satellite connectivity is crucial for Ukraine’s military communications and drone missions amid the ongoing conflict.
How the sides frame it
MODERATE AGREEMENTAll camps report that Starlink speeds were restored after a week of throttling, but left-leaning coverage stresses U.S. political pressure and calls for EU action, while right-leaning coverage highlights concerns about dependence on U.S. satellite technology and political friction.
LEFT
Frames the story as a consequence of U.S. political pressure and Trump-Musk actions that jeopardized Ukraine, urging European intervention.
CENTER
Presents a neutral account of the speed restoration and the disputed responsibility for the prior throttling.
RIGHT
Frames the restoration as a reminder of Ukraine’s reliance on U.S. satellite tech and the political tensions surrounding it.
The left emphasises
- U.S. pressure and Trump-Musk involvement harming Ukraine’s drones
- EU lawmakers’ petition demanding explanations from the United States
- Criticism of reliance on American-controlled satellites
The right emphasises
- Restored high-speed connectivity for Ukrainian drones
- Warnings about over-reliance on U.S. satellite technology
- Political friction between the U.S. and Ukraine influencing the issue
Possibly left out
- Left-leaning coverage reports Musk’s $445 million Republican contributions as a possible motive, absent from centrist coverage.
- Right-leaning coverage warns of over-reliance on U.S. satellite tech and calls for diversification, absent from left-leaning coverage.
