Ukraine's air defence hampered by Starlink limits and dwindling Patriot missiles
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine cannot use Starlink or Starshield to intercept Russian drones, while Patriot missile stocks are running low.
During a briefing at the EU Summit, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy explained that current speed restrictions on SpaceX's Starlink and Starshield services stop Ukraine from using them to target Russian Shahed drones. He said talks with U.S. military and diplomatic channels have not yet restored full capability. The president also highlighted that Ukraine's stock of U.S.-made Patriot interceptor missiles has been depleted, reducing its ability to defend against ballistic missiles.
SpaceX owner Elon Musk stated that any usage limits are set by the U.S. government and military, not the company. Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied that the United States had blocked access to the service, noting that the Ukrainian military has only used Starlink. The combined loss of satellite-based targeting and Patriot missiles raises concerns over Ukraine's air-defence readiness.
Why it matters
Ukraine's reduced ability to intercept Russian attacks could affect the war's dynamics and civilian safety.
