Ukrainian drone raids kill eight across Russian regions amid deep-strike campaign
Ukrainian drones struck multiple sites in Russia overnight, causing at least eight fatalities, while Russian officials reported shooting down hundreds of aircraft.
Overnight Ukrainian drone swarms reached deep into Russian territory, resulting in at least eight deaths, regional governors reported. In Udmurtia, a drone strike on a vehicle killed three people far beyond the front line, while in the Saratov region a residential building in Engels was hit, killing two. Saratov city, home to a major oil refinery, and Engels, which hosts a strategic bomber base, both suffered infrastructure damage, and Ukraine claimed to have ignited fires at those facilities and at an oil depot in Kaluga.
In Belgorod, three civilians died and five were injured by Ukrainian attacks. A Wildberries warehouse in Samara caught fire after a drone strike, but no injuries were reported. Russian authorities said they intercepted 635 drones, whereas Ukraine said it targeted economic and energy sites to weaken Moscow's war effort.
Why it matters
The strikes show Ukraine's ability to hit targets far inside Russia, raising the conflict's geographic scope and civilian risk.
