Ukrainian drones spark explosions and fires in Russia's Black Sea city Sochi
Ukrainian forces launched a drone strike on Sochi, igniting explosions and at least one large fire, while Russian air defenses responded.
A Ukrainian drone operation hit the Russian coastal city of Sochi on September 14, producing several explosions and setting a sizable fire alight, according to eyewitness videos. Monitoring channels Exilenova+ and Supernova+ reported the strike targeted locations in the Krasnodar Krai resort, roughly 650-700 km from the Ukrainian border. Sochi Mayor Anatoly Pakhomov said Russian air-defence units were active during the incident.
One outlet could not independently confirm the extent of the damage, and Ukrainian officials have not yet responded. This attack adds to a pattern of recent Ukrainian actions in Sochi, including a sea-drone strike on a beach promenade on September 10 and hits on a naval vessel and oil depot earlier in the month. President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that Russian airspace may become effectively closed to civilian traffic because of increasing drone activity.
