Ukrainian forces report restoration and improving performance of Starshield terminals

Ukrainian defence units say Starshield terminals used for high-speed movement are back online and their performance is gradually improving.

According to reports from Ukrainian defence units, the Starshield terminals that support high-speed movement have resumed service and are showing steady performance gains. The Ministry of Defence is probing why the restrictions were imposed the day before and under what conditions they were applied. At the front, the ministry is also measuring how quickly the terminals function under combat conditions.

The Starshield system is a militarised version of SpaceX's Starlink satellite network. Earlier, Szerhij Beskrestnov, an adviser to the Ukrainian president and radio-technology expert, highlighted changes in terminal operation. The ministry has consulted American, NATO and SpaceX partners about the recent limitations, which President Volodimir Zelenszkij previously warned could endanger lives if communications were lost.

Why it matters

Restored Starshield communications boost Ukraine's battlefield coordination and reduce the risk of critical signal outages.

How the sides frame it

MODERATE AGREEMENT

Left-leaning coverage stresses the mystery and possible U.S. directive behind the one-day Starshield cut, while right-leaning coverage highlights the restoration of service, performance gains, and the Ministry’s investigation into the restriction.

LEFT

Focuses on the uncertainty of the outage’s cause and speculation about U.S. control of Starshield

RIGHT

Centers on the restoration of terminals, performance improvements, and a probe into why the restriction occurred

The left emphasises

  • the disruption lasted only one day before speeds returned
  • the exact cause remains unclear—technical fault or a U.S. directive
  • Elon Musk says the U.S. government owns and controls Starshield

The right emphasises

  • Starshield terminals have resumed service and are showing steady performance gains
  • the Ministry of Defence is probing why the restrictions were imposed
  • consultations with American, NATO and SpaceX partners are underway
