Ukrainian forces strike oil facilities in Russia's Samara and Volgograd regions

Ukrainian troops hit oil refineries and a blending plant in Samara and Volgograd, while also targeting airports, a rocket centre and ammunition depots across several Russian regions.

Ukrainian forces launched strikes on oil installations in Russia's Samara and Volgograd regions, hitting a large refinery in Volgograd and a blending station in Samara, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. He added that the operations also struck Russian airports, a rocket-and-space complex, and an ammunition warehouse in the Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod, and Krasnodar border areas. Zelensky highlighted that roughly half of the F-16 jets delivered to Ukraine are still in Europe for repairs, limiting Ukraine's air defence capabilities.

He urged Western partners to relocate more maintenance work to Ukrainian territory for faster redeployment. The president linked the intensified Russian attacks to the upcoming U.S. mid-term elections, suggesting they aim to send a message to Washington.

Why it matters

The attacks show Ukraine's ability to hit strategic Russian energy sites and underscore challenges in maintaining its new fighter fleet.
