Umno leader offers three parliamentary routes to challenge Malaysia's unity government

Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim explained that UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has three options to challenge the unity government without depending on Prime Minister Anwar to expel the party. The options are for UMNO and Barisan Nasional MPs to pull their backing, for UMNO ministers to resign from the cabinet, or to table a no-confidence motion when Parliament reconvenes on Oct 5. Karim emphasized that the arrangement is a loose coalition, so any party can withdraw at any time, and argued Anwar is unlikely to dismiss UMNO ministers.

He referenced UMNO’s recent ultimatum calling for either a snap election or its removal from the government. Political scientist Mujibu Abd Muis warned that while the government could still hold a narrow majority without BN, loss of support from GPS or GRS would threaten its stability. The debate underscores the fragile balance ahead of the 2026 UMNO General Assembly and the upcoming general election.
