UMNO Youth chief Akmal signals possible move from Merlimau to Serkam or Sungai Rambai

Akmal thanked Merlimau voters on Facebook and asked whether he should contest the BN strongholds of Serkam or Sungai Rambai in the next election.

Akmal posted on Facebook to thank Merlimau voters for their support in the 2021 state election, where he secured the seat with a 3,248-vote majority. He then asked followers where he should run next, suggesting Serkam or Sungai Rambai as alternatives. Both constituencies are traditional UMNO bastions within the Barisan Nasional coalition, with Serkam narrowly held in 2021 after a 79-vote win over a Perikatan Nasional candidate.

Akmal has held positions in the Melaka State Executive Council, first overseeing health and later rural development, agriculture and food security since 2023. He also rose to become UMNO Youth chief after defeating three rivals in the 2023 internal election. His possible relocation could reshape BN's electoral strategy in Melaka.

Why it matters

Akmal's potential seat change could alter the balance of power in BN's traditional strongholds in Melaka.
