UN rights chief warns Israeli actions in Hebron could amount to ethnic cleansing

UN human rights chief Volker Türk said Israeli threats to clear neighborhoods in Hebron raise serious concerns of ethnic cleansing, after more than 2,000 Palestinians have been displaced.

Volker Türk warned that Israeli moves to empty parts of Hebron pose a grave risk of ethnic cleansing. The operation, which started on Friday, has forced over 2,000 Palestinians out of the occupied West Bank city. Türk criticized the use of force as unnecessary and disproportionate, calling for an end to collective punishment, which he said violates international law.

Why it matters

The statements highlight escalating tensions in the West Bank and raise concerns about possible violations of international humanitarian law.
