UN warns three quarters of Yemeni households face hunger amid intensified fighting

The World Food Programme reports that 74% of households in government-held areas of Yemen cannot meet basic food needs as fighting displaces tens of thousands.

A surge in hostilities between Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces and Iran-aligned Houthi fighters has left three-quarters of households in accessible government-held regions unable to secure essential food, according to the World Food Programme. The conflict has forced tens of thousands to flee, disrupting supply chains in a country that imports roughly 90% of its food. The WFP estimates 10 million people reside in these areas and plans to expand aid to 1.5 million individuals, but it requires $109 million to do so.

Funding shortfalls have already forced the agency to divert resources from planned November distributions, threatening gaps in assistance within weeks. Overall, 18.3 million Yemenis face severe food insecurity, including 2.2 million children under five who are acutely malnourished. The agency warns that continued fighting could further destabilize regional shipping lanes and drive up global food and fuel prices.

Why it matters

Widespread hunger in Yemen threatens regional stability and could raise global food prices.
