UNC deputy urges careful, transparent handling of DMZ mine incident
Lt. Gen. Scott Winter said the United Nations Command must plan and communicate cautiously and openly after a mine blast in the DMZ injured South Korean soldiers.
During a podcast hosted by the Royal United Services Institute, Lt. Gen. Scott Winter, deputy commander of the United Nations Command, called for a careful and transparent approach to incidents along the inter-Korean border after a mine blast injured three South Korean soldiers, two seriously. He stressed that robust planning and open communication are essential to avoid provocations and escalation. The UNC, which administers the Military Demarcation Line and the DMZ buffer zone, noted that an antipersonnel mine found south of the line constitutes an armistice breach.
Seoul has blamed the North, whereas the North accuses Seoul of fabricating its investigation. Critics in Seoul have questioned the UNC’s perceived passivity. Winter did not provide specifics on the joint investigation with Seoul and said the command maintains daily communications with the Korean People’s Army.
Why it matters
The incident raises tensions on the Korean Peninsula and tests the UNC's ability to manage border security and prevent escalation.
