Union pushes for government aid to soften planned postal service cuts
Fagforbundet is urging coalition partners to back a rescue package for Posten to offset upcoming reductions in mail delivery frequency.
Fagforbundet is lobbying the governing coalition to approve a financial aid package for Posten in response to the government's draft budget that would limit regular mail delivery to one day per one outlet from July 2027. The union's plan calls for state funding to maintain Saturday newspaper delivery in the districts and to fund a nationwide door-to-door service for elderly residents. Helene Harsvik Skeibrok said the measure would not preserve every threatened job but would mitigate the scale of the restructuring.
The Socialist Left's Anne Lise Fredlund and Red Party's Mímir Kristjánsson indicated their parties view the initiative favorably, urging a united front before the upcoming budget negotiations. Both parties suggested they might accept fewer delivery days if newspaper distribution and essential services are secured.
Why it matters
The proposal could determine the future of postal jobs and essential services for rural and elderly communities in Norway.
