US ban cuts Tehran’s international flights by over 40%, halting several routes

Since the US ban began on Sept 23, Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Airport saw daily international flights drop from 91 to 53, a 42 % decline.

Flight tracking data indicates that Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport now handles roughly 53 international flights per day, down from 91 before the United States’ ban took effect on Sept 23, marking a 42 % reduction. The downturn follows earlier airspace closures after Israeli-American strikes at the end of February. Since the ban, flights to Georgia, Oman and Azerbaijan have stopped entirely, and services to Dubai and Iraq have not operated since late September, with the UAE confirming it is enforcing the restriction.

Despite the cuts, flights to China remain steady at eight daily, and the Turkey-Tehran link has declined only 19 %, though passengers report significant disruption and Mahan Air has halted its Turkish flights since Sept 20. Some Iranian airlines, like Caspian Airlines, have added flights on the Turkey route, while other destinations—including Armenia, Russia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Thailand, Tajikistan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Qatar—continue to receive service, though tracking gaps may omit some flights.

Why it matters

The story shows how US sanctions are sharply limiting Iran's global air connectivity and affecting regional travel.
