USR says it will not back Niculescu government if PSD ministers are included
USR leader Dominic Fritz declared the party will refuse to support a cabinet led by Luca Niculescu if it contains members of the PSD.
USR reacted to the appointment of Luca Niculescu as prime-ministerial candidate by stating it will scrutinize the coalition’s agenda, the list of ministers, and the parliamentary backing behind Niculescu. Dominic Fritz, USR’s head, warned that the party will not endorse a cabinet featuring PSD ministers or one perceived as dominated by the PSD. He argued that a prime minister dependent on PSD directives could not be truly independent.
While acknowledging the urgency of forming a government, USR insists on a team capable of delivering results, not one that restores power to the party it holds responsible for one outlet crisis. The decision will be taken within USR’s internal bodies after discussions with the designated premier. Niculescu, a career diplomat known for steering Romania’s OECD accession, lacks a traditional political background.
Why it matters
The stance could affect the formation of Romania's next government and the balance of power between USR and PSD.
