Veteran politician Norhizam Hassan Baktee signals readiness for another Melaka contest
Former Pengkalan Batu assemblyman Norhizam Hassan Baktee says he will run in the upcoming Melaka state election, though he has not confirmed a constituency.
Norhizam Hassan Baktee, who once represented Pengkalan Batu in the Melaka State Assembly, confirmed he is prepared to stand in the forthcoming state election, though he has not specified which seat he will contest. As the vice-chief of the Hang Tuah Jaya Bersatu faction, he said he would accept any constituency the party assigns, but emphasized his wish to return to Pengkalan Batu, where voters reportedly urged his comeback.
A social-media poster claiming his return went viral, but Norhizam could not identify its source. His political journey began with UMNO, shifted to DAP where he won Pengkalan Batu in the 14th general election, then left DAP in 2020 to become an independent, losing his seat in the 2021 Melaka election with 1,218 votes. The seat was subsequently captured by Barisan Nasional’s Kalsom Noordin. In 2024, Norhizam announced his affiliation with Bersatu.
Why it matters
The announcement could reshape candidate line-ups and voter dynamics in Melaka's upcoming election.
