Vice President Vance Announces $858 Million DOT Disaster Aid at North Carolina Rally

Vice President JD Vance unveiled $858 million in additional Department of Transportation disaster relief for North Carolina during a rally supporting Senate candidate Michael Whatley.

Vice President JD Vance traveled to Hendersonville, North Carolina, where he proclaimed an extra $858 million in Department of Transportation disaster relief to help communities still recovering from Hurricane Helene. The money will target eight key corridors, such as the I-40 corridor and the Pigeon River Gorge, adding to FEMA’s earlier $7.5 billion commitment. Speaking to a crowd that included supporters of Senate candidate Michael Whatley, Vance contrasted the funding with what he described as inaction by Democrats under Governor Roy Cooper.

He praised Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and credited the Trump administration for the aid. The rally, held at the Hyder Warehouse, also served to boost Whatley’s campaign, who trails Cooper by 9.6 points in polls, ahead of a Trump rally scheduled for Greenville the following day.

Why it matters

The new funding aims to accelerate recovery from Hurricane Helene and underscores the political stakes in North Carolina's Senate race.
