WHO seeks detailed data from Russia on Irkutsk scientist's mysterious pneumonia death
The World Health Organization asked Russian authorities for information about the death of a 28-year-old female scientist in Irkutsk, after media reports linked it to a pneumonia outbreak, but received no reply yet.
In Geneva, WHO specialist Abdirahman Mahamud explained that the agency’s request for data from Russia follows reliable media coverage, but no response has been received from Russian authorities. The inquiry concerns a 28-year-old female researcher at the Institute of Epidemiology and Disease Control in Irkutsk who died on a Friday, with the official cause listed as pneumonia of unknown origin. WHO’s director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the organization does not yet have a full understanding of the situation and cannot perform a comprehensive risk evaluation.
WHO has asked for specifics on the laboratory tests performed on the scientist and about 200 other individuals, the substances she handled, safety measures in place, and any vaccine data. The agency also noted it has been informed of nearly 4,000 cases of the disease in ten countries between 2019 and 2025, resulting in 423 deaths.
Why it matters
Understanding the cause of the Irkutsk scientist's death is crucial for assessing potential public-health risks linked to the broader pneumonia outbreak.
