Wildfire near Benahavis erupts amid strong winds, prompting aerial response and evacuations

Around 1.41 pm on Sunday a wildfire ignited near the Ermita del Rosario in Benahavis, a village popular with British expatriates on the Costa del Sol. Strong winds of up to 50 km/h hampered firefighting efforts as smoke drifted over the coastal beaches. Civil Protection dispatched firefighters, helicopters and airplanes, and an ES‑Alert instructed locals to shelter inside masonry buildings. Residents of the nearby Montemayor Alto estate were evacuated as authorities declared Emergency Level One.
