Wildfires Sweep Through Europe's Top Summer Resorts, Displacing Thousands

This summer’s wildfire season has devastated several of Europe’s most visited holiday spots. In Crete’s Rethymno district, authorities evacuated thousands of people, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies confirmed that homes, farmland and livestock were lost. Fires on Paros and near Porto Germeno forced residents to flee to beaches as winds made the blaze unpredictable.

Spain saw unprecedented fires across the Madrid-Ávila region and in Andalusia’s Benahavis, prompting mass evacuations and causing injuries to civilians and firefighters. In France, Provence’s Cotignac and the Atlantic coast around Lège-Cap-Ferret and Lacanau were engulfed, leading to the evacuation of campsites and the evacuation of the Clooney family from their estate near Brignoles. A helicopter collision during firefighting operations in Greece resulted in the death of a Danish pilot and a Greek fire service liaison officer, underscoring the danger faced by emergency crews.
