Wildfires devastate Sumatra's elephant habitat, pushing the species toward extinction

Geopix reports that extensive fires this summer have consumed much of the forest that Sumatra elephants rely on, fragmenting their range and limiting food and water sources. Annisa Rahmawati of the organization warned that the damage forces elephants to alter their movement patterns. The World Wildlife Fund notes that only a few thousand Sumatra elephants remain in the wild. Borneo, home to the critically endangered orangutan, is also suffering from severe fires exacerbated by the El Niño weather pattern.
