Yemen conflict escalates with drone interceptions and strikes on Saudi targets

Yemeni government forces reported intercepting a drone bound for Medina and a missile aimed at Riyadh as fighting with Houthi rebels intensifies along the Red Sea coast.

Government-aligned forces in Yemen announced they intercepted a drone bound for Medina and a missile directed at Riyadh, underscoring a surge in clashes with Iran-aligned Houthi rebels along the western Red Sea coast. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said his fighters carried out a high-quality operation against Aramco in Dhahran and struck Riyadh airport and a refinery, vowing further attacks on Saudi airports and oil sites.

Saudi Ministry of Energy officials reported a limited fire at an Aramco building in Dhahran with no deaths or injuries. In response, the Saudi-led coalition launched air strikes on Houthi strongholds in Sanaa, breaking a ceasefire that had held since 2022. Recent Houthi raids have hit key Saudi infrastructure, including Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport, which suffered dozens of casualties, and other airports and energy facilities. The fighting threatens major economic events in Saudi Arabia, such as an upcoming investment conference and sports tournaments, while humanitarian conditions in Yemen’s Taiz governorate worsen with severe supply shortages and rising hospital admissions.

Why it matters

The escalation threatens regional stability, global oil shipments and humanitarian conditions in Yemen.
