Yemeni army reports heavy Houthi losses as fighting escalates in Taiz

The Yemeni military said its operations in Taiz caused thousands of Houthi casualties and led to the closure of the al-Houban crossing.

The Yemeni army announced that its recent operations in the southwestern governorate of Taiz resulted in more than 1,500 Houthi fighters being killed or injured within 24 hours. Colonel Majed Abdullah al-Nazili detailed that the assaults employed warplanes, drones, artillery, missiles and rocket launchers against rebel positions, reinforcements, command centres and other military assets. Most of the reported casualties occurred around Bani Bakari, Maqbanah, al-Aqroud and the approaches to Taiz city.

In response to what it described as an attempted Houthi infiltration and nearby attacks, government forces closed the al-Houban crossing, a vital road linking Houthi-controlled territory with government-held Taiz. The crossing had been reopened for humanitarian traffic in 2024 after a nine-year closure. The renewed hostilities have forced at least 198,000 people to flee their homes, with Taiz province sheltering the highest number of displaced families. The fighting follows the breakdown of a UN-brokered truce that had held since April 2022 and reflects the ongoing strategic importance of Taiz in the wider Yemeni war.

Why it matters

The surge in fighting threatens civilian safety and hampers humanitarian access in a key battleground of Yemen's war.

How the sides frame it

HIGH AGREEMENT

Both camps report the Houthi seizure of al-Safiya and the cutting of the main road to Taiz, but left-leaning coverage highlights the humanitarian fallout and the government's announced counter-offensive, while centrist coverage stresses Taiz’s role as a symbolic stronghold and the expected costly battle for the Houthis.

LEFT

Focuses on the Houthi capture of al-Safiya, the encirclement of Taiz and rising humanitarian concerns, and underscores the government's launch of a major military operation to retake the territory.

CENTER

Emphasizes the Houthi cut of the vital supply route, portrays Taiz as a symbolic stronghold of anti-rebel resistance, and warns of a costly, difficult battle for the Houthis.

The left emphasises

  • Houthi forces captured al-Safiya district and blocked a key supply corridor
  • encirclement of Taiz heightens humanitarian concerns
  • government announced a major military operation to retake territory
