AISA leader warns against normalising Delhi protest crackdown after mass arrests

Neha Bora of AISA condemned the police's forceful suppression of a large Delhi rally demanding the chief election commissioner’s resignation, noting that 7,000 demonstrators were detained.

A massive demonstration took place in New Delhi on October 10, with demonstrators demanding the resignation of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over concerns about the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Police barred the crowd from reaching Jantar Mantar and subsequently detained roughly 7,000 people, among them AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal and former chief ministers Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar.

Neha Bora, national president of the All India Students' Association, voiced her criticism of the crackdown from a police vehicle, stressing that such repression must not be accepted as normal. The Supreme Court convened a special hearing to consider petitions contesting the preventive detentions, with Justice Joymalya Bagchi acknowledging the protesters’ anguish. The episode highlights escalating tensions between opposition groups and law-enforcement agencies in the capital.

Why it matters

The arrests raise concerns about democratic protest rights and the handling of electoral reform disputes in India.
